The State and Democracy
Essential Questions
-
What is a state?
A state is a large piece of land that is autonomous. It has its own government, rules, economy, etc. It is independent from other states. Also, the people who live in a state usually share a same cultural background and language.

Why is democracy such a popular form of government?
Democracy is the system of government of 123 countries, out of a total of 192. Elections are the base of a democracy, which is what makes it such a popular form of government around the world. By having elections, people feel like they have a say in who governs their country and how it is governed. It is also popular because citizens have rights such as freedom of speech, which everyone deserves.
Enduring Understanding: How does what we learned connect to the real world?
Learning about democracy and why it is the most applied form of government around the world connects directly to the world because democracy is the world’s government system. Learning what a proper state and a proper democracy are like led me to question whether Chile is a real democracy or not. After a lot of research on my country and it’s history regarding government systems, I wrote an essay that you can check out below.
