High School Music Wix Portfolio Q2

1) Complete the table below with information about the songs you performed in the Christmas Show. You need to write about every song you performed in.

2) When you perform a song composed by someone else, what issues do you need to consider when preparing your own version? Give examples from the songs you performed at the Christmas Concert.

Things to consider when performing a song that was composed by another band or singer are whether or not you should give it the same style and mood as the original one, whether or not you should add/take out certain instruments, whether or not you should add/take out verses, etc.
At the Christmas concert yesterday, we performed stitches. We added a melodeon, we did not include drums, and we sang it in a more relaxed/soft way. All this made it sound like an acoustic version of the original song.

3)

3.1) How do you find out the original expressive intentions*  of a song? Give examples from the songs you performed at the Christmas Concert. *How the song should be performed/communicated.

The best way to figure out the original expressive intentions is to watch the original music videos to see what the original performer’s message is to the audience through their song.

3.2) Do you think it is important to copy the original exactly or is it acceptable to develop your own interpretation? How do you find the right balance between originality and authenticity?
I think it depends on the song, but in most cases I would say developing our own interpretation of the song because it makes it more fun and entertaining for both the performers and the audience. Although with some songs I think it is better if they are performed as similar as possible to the original one, like we did with back in black on the first quarter, for example.

4) What did you find most challenging about the pieces you performed at the Christmas concerts? How did you try to improve your work in rehearsals?
The hardest one for me was probably stitches, since I don’t have a singing voice. I tried to improve by finding a pitch in which my voice sounded least-awful, and trying to make it blend in with the voices of the other singers.

5) The HS Christmas Performance was an informal event.

5.1) How do you think this context influences the way you present your performances?

I think since we feel so comfortable performing in front of our school, we are able to act more confident and we don’t feel too bad if we make mistakes while performing. Also, since we don’t see it as such a big deal, sometimes we don’t focus on what is really important about a good performance, which is making the audience participate and have fun.

5.2) Give an example of a performance context where you would need to present your performance differently.

If I was performing for a bigger group of people, or for a competition, etc, I would probably be a lot more nervous, and I would struggle showing confidence on stage. But I would try a lot harder to hide my nerves and make the audience feel entertained during my performance.
