I. Essential Question: How do performers select repertoire?
1) What song did you perform at the music competition?
Gold on the Ceiling - The Black Keys
2)Was it suitabe for performing at a music competition?? Explain.
I think in events like music competitions, songs have to be entertaining. Even though it is nice to listen to slow, chill music sometimes, I don’t think music competitions are the best opportunity to perform these. From my point of view, our song suited the situation very well: it had a fast beat, guitar solo, and it was loud and fun to listen to.
II. Essential Question: How do musicians improve the quality of their performance?
1) What did you find most challenging about the pieces you performed for the music challenge?
Personally for me, I am not very good at playing instruments, it requires a lot of concentration for me to play pieces correctly. At the performance, it was challenging to do something else apart from looking down at my fingers while I played. Despite this, I think I did okay by not just standing still, but moving around and singing instead.
2) How did you try to improve your work in rehearsals?
I practiced my part constantly, so that I would be able to remember it very well by the time the competition came, and that way I’d be able to do something else on stage apart from looking down at my fingers.
III. Essential Question: How do we discern the musical creators’ and performers’ expressive intent?
1) What is the mood of the song you performed?
The song we performed at KPIS has a rock-kind of mood, which makes it fun to watch - and fun to perform.
2) How did you use the elements of music to communicate the mood of your song?
While we were on stage, most of us danced around and showed that it is a song you can move to, which was our way to communicate that it is not a sad or relaxing song, but a more active and entertaining one.
IV. Essential Question: How do we judge the quality of musical work(s) and performance(s)?
1) The music challenge was judged according to five criteria. They are ‘overall tone quality’, ‘techniques’, ‘musicality’, ‘expression’ and ‘audience impact’. In the table below give your own personal definition for each criteria and then grade the band or singing video of your choice.
